How to play

  • Four players in two teams of partners (you team up with the player across from you). One 52-card deck, 13 cards each.
  • The dealer's last card is turned face up, and its suit is trump for the hand. The card stays face up on the table until the dealer's turn in the first trick, when it goes into the dealer's hand.
  • The player to the dealer's left leads first. You must follow the led suit if you can; if not, you may play a trump or discard another card.
  • If a trick contains trumps, the highest trump wins; otherwise the highest card of the led suit wins (A is highest). The winner leads the next trick.
  • After all 13 tricks, the team that took 7 or more scores 1 point for each trick over 6 (for example, 8 tricks score 2 points). Honors aren't scored.
  • One game only: the first team to 5 points (or 7, optional) wins. After each hand, the deal passes clockwise to the next player.
  • Online, each move has a 20-second limit; on timeout, a card is played for you and auto-play starts.

Detailed rules and controls

Play cards
  • Follow suit if you can: if you hold the led suit, you must play it.
  • If you don't have the led suit, you can play a trump or discard any other card.
  • Within a suit, A is highest, then K, Q, J, 10 and so on down to 2.
  • Everyone can see the dealer's turned-up card; the dealer takes it into hand at their turn in the first trick.
Scoring
  • Each hand has 13 tricks. A team that takes 7 or more scores 1 point for each trick over 6: 7 tricks score 1 point, and 13 tricks score 7.
  • Only one team scores each hand; the other team neither gains nor loses points.
  • Honors aren't scored: the A, K, Q and J of trump earn no extra points.
  • Points are scored only when a hand is finished. The first team to reach the target wins the game, and points beyond the target still count toward the total.
  • A single game decides the winner; there's no best-of-three rubber.
Controls
  • Tap a card to select it, then tap it again or tap “Play cards” to play it. Cards you can't play are dimmed.
  • Cards with a star are trumps, and trumps are sorted to the far right of your hand.
  • Tap “Last trick” on the scoreboard to see the trick just played.

Frequently asked questions

If you can't follow the led suit, do you have to play a trump?

Spades are trump, an opponent leads a heart, and you're out of hearts. You can win the trick with a low spade or discard a useless low card. If your partner has already played the highest heart in the trick, there's no need to waste a trump.
