How to play

  • Four players in two teams; the player across from you is your partner. Only the 9, 10, J, Q, K and A are used, 24 cards in all. Each player gets 5 cards, and one card is turned up on top of the 3-card kitty.
  • In the first round, starting left of the dealer, each player can order up the up-card's suit as trump or pass. Once someone orders it up, the dealer picks up that card and discards one.
  • If all four pass in the first round, the up-card is turned down; in the second round, players can name one of the other three suits. If everyone passes again, the cards are redealt; you can also set the option so the dealer must name trump.
  • The highest trump is the J of the trump suit (right bower), then the J of the other suit of the same color (left bower, which counts as trump), then A, K, Q, 10, 9.
  • You must follow the led suit if you can (the left bower counts as trump); if you can't, you may play a trump or discard. The highest card wins the trick, and the winner leads the next one.
  • The makers score 1 point for 3 or 4 tricks and 2 points for all 5; with fewer than 3 tricks, they're euchred and the defenders score 2 points.
  • When naming trump, you can choose to go alone: your partner sits out the hand, and taking all 5 tricks on your own scores 4 points.
  • The first team to 10 points wins (rooms can choose a 5-point short game). Online, each move has a 25-second limit; on timeout, a move is made for you and auto-play starts.

Detailed rules and controls

Card ranking
  • Trump, high to low: right bower (J of the trump suit), left bower (J of the other suit of the same color), A, K, Q, 10, 9.
  • Other suits, high to low: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9. Because the left bower counts as trump, its original suit has only 5 cards.
  • The left bower always counts as trump: it follows suit when trump is led, but it can't be played to follow its original suit.
Bidding
  • In the first round, only the up-card's suit can become trump: once someone orders it up, the dealer picks up the up-card and discards one card.
  • If all four pass in the first round, the up-card is turned down; in the second round, players can name one of the other three suits.
  • If nobody makes trump in either round, the next dealer redeals. Optional “stick the dealer” (off by default): the dealer can't pass in the second round.
  • Going alone is declared when naming trump, and the player's partner sits out the hand. If the dealer's partner goes alone, the dealer sits out and the up-card is no longer used.
Scoring
  • The makers score 1 point for 3 or 4 tricks and 2 points for all 5.
  • A lone hand scores 4 points for all 5 tricks and 1 point for 3 or 4.
  • If the makers take fewer than 3 tricks, they're euchred and the defenders score 2 points.

Frequently asked questions

Which suit does the left bower belong to?

Hearts are trump, and you hold the J♦, the A♥ and three spades. The J♦ is the left bower: it counts as a heart and is the second-highest trump. Count your trumps before bidding: the left bower plus the trump ace is usually worth ordering up, and if your partner is the dealer, they also get to pick up the up-card.
