Detailed rules and controls
Tai values
- Concealed hand 1 tai: no chow, pung or exposed kong. Concealed self-draw 3 tai (concealed, self-drawn, no help). A self-draw without a concealed hand: 1 tai
- All Chows 2 tai: five chows, no honors or flowers, a two-sided wait, winning on a discard
- All Melded 2 tai: all five sets come from chow, pung or exposed kong, winning on a discard
- All Pungs 4 tai: all five sets are pungs (or kongs)
- Three concealed pungs 2 tai, four 5 tai, five 8 tai; a pung completed with someone's discard counts as exposed
- Dragons: each pung of Red, Green or White Dragons 1 tai; Little Three Dragons 4 tai; Big Three Dragons 8 tai
- Prevalent and seat winds: a pung of the matching wind 1 tai each; Little Four Winds 8 tai; Big Four Winds 16 tai
- Half Flush 4 tai; Full Flush 8 tai; All Honors 16 tai
- Own flowers: each flower matching your seat wind 1 tai (East: Spring and Plum; South: Summer and Orchid; West: Autumn and Bamboo; North: Winter and Chrysanthemum). All four seasons or all four flowers make a Flower Set, 2 tai
- Single Wait 1 tai: waiting on only one tile
- Last tile draw, last discard, kong replacement win, robbing the kong: 1 tai each
- Lik Gu Lik Gu 8 tai: a concealed hand of seven pairs plus one pung
- Heavenly, Earthly and Human Hands: 16 tai each
Scoring and dealer streaks
- Each win: base 3 points plus 1 point per tai. On a self-draw each of the other three pays; on a discard only the discarder pays. You can win with no tai
- Dealer 1 tai: counted extra when the dealer wins, discards the winning tile or loses to a self-draw; after n consecutive deals add n for the streak and n more, 2n tai in total
- If the dealer wins or the hand is a draw, the dealer deals again; if another player wins, the deal passes to the next player
- The last 16 tiles of the wall are never drawn; if nobody has won by then, the hand is a draw with no score
- You can only chow from the player before you; a win beats pung and kong, and pung and kong beat chow; if several players win on the same tile, the first in turn order after the discarder wins
Frequently asked questions
Can you win at Taiwanese Mahjong with no tai?
Yes. Taiwanese Mahjong has no minimum, so a hand with no tai can still win for the base 3 points, plus 1 point for each tai it has. Whenever the dealer wins, discards the winning tile or loses to a self-draw, 1 extra dealer tai is counted, and more for every consecutive deal, so take extra care against a dealer on a streak.
