How to play

Hong Kong Mahjong gameplay screenshot
  • Hong Kong Mahjong: four players hold 13 tiles each, draw one and discard one, and win with four sets plus a pair. The 144 tiles include 8 flowers; set a drawn flower aside and draw a replacement.
  • You may chow from the player before you and pung or kong anyone's discard; a win takes priority, and if several players want to win on the same tile, the first in turn order after the discarder wins.
  • You need 3 fan to win (a chicken hand can't win), capped at 13 fan; limit hands such as All Honors and Thirteen Orphans score the full 13 fan.
  • Scoring: 3 fan 8 points, 4 fan 16, 5 fan 24, 6 fan 32 … 13 fan 384. The discarder pays it all; on a self-draw each of the other three pays half.
  • If the dealer wins or the hand is a draw, the dealer deals again; if another player wins, the deal passes on.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chicken hand win at Hong Kong Mahjong?

No. Hong Kong Mahjong needs at least 3 fan, so a chicken hand with no fan can't win. A concealed hand, a self-draw and no flowers are worth 1 fan each, exactly 3 together; a half flush alone is worth 3 fan and is the most common way to reach the minimum.
