How to play
Chinese Official Mahjong (Mahjong Competition Rules): four players start with 13 tiles each and take turns drawing one tile and discarding one. Win by completing 4 sets (chows, pungs or kongs) plus 1 pair (the eyes). Special hands include Seven Pairs, Thirteen Orphans, Lesser Honors and Knitted Tiles, Greater Honors and Knitted Tiles, Knitted Straight and more.
A win needs at least 8 fan, not counting Flower tiles. There are 81 fan (scoring patterns). Fan are counted under the scoring principles, so the same sets are never scored twice, and if a hand can be split up in more than one way, the highest-scoring split is used.
The set has 144 tiles, including 8 Flower tiles: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Plum, Orchid, Bamboo and Chrysanthemum. When you draw a Flower, set it aside face up and draw a replacement from the other end of the wall. Each Flower adds 1 fan.
You can chow only the discard of the player on your left, but you can pung or kong anyone's discard. A win takes priority over a pung or kong, and a pung or kong takes priority over a chow. If several players can win on the same discard, the first in turn order after the discarder wins. You can also win by robbing the tile another player adds to a kong.
On a self-drawn win, each of the other three players pays 8 points plus the fan total. On a win from a discard, the discarder pays 8 points plus the fan total, and the other two players pay 8 points each. If the wall runs out with no winner, the hand is drawn and no points are scored.
The deal passes after every hand (the dealer never repeats), and the prevalent wind changes every 4 hands. Play 1 hand, an East round of 4 hands or a full game of 16 hands; the highest total score wins. Online, each move has a 20-second limit. On timeout, your drawn tile is discarded automatically and auto-play takes over.
