How to play

Snakes and Ladders gameplay screenshot
  • Snakes and Ladders is a dice race decided purely by luck: 2–4 players take turns rolling one die. Tokens start just off the bottom-left corner and follow the winding 1→100 path; the first to reach square 100 wins.
  • Stop at the foot of a ladder and you climb to its top; stop on a snake's head and you slide down to its tail. Just passing over them doesn't count, and stopping on a ladder's top or a snake's tail does nothing.
  • You must land exactly on square 100: if the roll is too high, go to 100 and walk the extra steps back, and landing on a ladder foot or a snake's head on the way back still counts. You can also choose "Stay put": a roll that would go past 100 is not moved.
  • Optional rule "Roll again on a 6": a 6 earns another roll, up to three rolls per turn.
  • Several tokens can share a square; they never capture or block each other. Each turn you only roll: moving, climbing and sliding happen automatically, so computer players have no difficulty levels.
  • The game ends as soon as someone reaches square 100; the others are ranked by how far they got. Online, each turn has a 15-second limit; on timeout the die is rolled for you and auto-play takes over.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if you are a few squares from 100 and roll too high?

A token on square 97 that rolls a 5 first reaches 100, then walks the 2 extra steps back and stops on 98. Landing on a snake's head while walking back still sends you down: on the classic board, rolling a 6 from square 99 bounces back to the snake on 95 and slides all the way to 75. With the "Stay put" rule, a roll that goes past 100 simply does not move.
