Detailed rules and controls
Fan values
- Basic win 0 fan; All Pungs 1 fan; Full Flush, Seven Pairs and Outside Hand 2 fan each; All 2-5-8 Pungs (All Pungs using only 2, 5 and 8) 2 more fan; Golden Hook (four melds and a single-tile wait) 1 more fan
- Four of a kind: +1 fan for each set of four identical tiles in your hand or kongs (Dragon Seven Pairs is Seven Pairs plus this bonus)
- Self-drawn, win on a kong replacement, win on a discard after a kong, robbing the kong, last tile draw and last discard: +1 fan each
- Heavenly and Earthly Hands score the cap directly. The cap is 4 fan and points are 2 to the power of the fan: 0 fan 1, 1 fan 2, 2 fan 4, 3 fan 8, 4 fan 16
Scoring
- Discard win: the discarder alone pays. Self-draw: every player who hasn't won pays. If several players win on one discard, each win counts
- Wind and rain: for an exposed kong the player who gave the tile pays 2; for an added kong every player who hasn't won pays 1; for a concealed kong every player who hasn't won pays 2, scored as soon as the kong is made
- Void check: if you still hold tiles of your void suit when the wall runs out, you pay 16 to every other player still in the hand
- Ready check: when the wall runs out, players who aren't ready pay the ready players according to the highest fan they could win with
- The first player to win deals the next hand (if several win on one discard, the discarder deals); if nobody wins, the dealer deals again
Frequently asked questions
Can you win at Sichuan Mahjong while still holding tiles of your void suit?
No. After choosing a void suit you must discard all of its tiles first, and you can't win while holding any of them. Anyone still holding void-suit tiles when the wall runs out pays every other player 16. After the swap, look at which suit you have least of and make that your void suit.
