How to play

Guangdong Mahjong gameplay screenshot
  • Guangdong Mahjong uses 136 tiles (no flowers). Four players hold 13 tiles each and win with any complete hand of four sets plus a pair (or seven pairs, or thirteen orphans); there is no minimum fan.
  • There is no chow, but you can pung and kong. If several players want to win on the same tile, the first in turn order wins; robbing a kong is allowed.
  • More fan means more points, capped at 4 fan: 0 fan is 1 point, 1 fan 2 points … 4 fan 16 points. On a discard win the discarder pays; on a self-draw each of the other three pays. Kongs score on the spot.
  • Optional White Dragon jokers: the four White Dragons are wild and can replace any tile; winning without using a joker adds 1 fan.
  • The winner deals the next hand; if the hand is a draw, the dealer deals again.

Frequently asked questions

How many fan do you need to win at Guangdong Mahjong?

None. Any complete hand of four sets plus a pair (or seven pairs, or thirteen orphans) wins, and a chicken hand with 0 fan still scores 1 point. For more points aim for All Pungs, Half Flush or Full Flush: each extra fan doubles the score, up to the 4-fan cap of 16.
