How to play

  • White moves first. Checkmate the opposing king to win. A player with no legal moves who is not in check is stalemated: a draw.
  • Castling requires an unmoved king and rook, no pieces between them, and a king that is not in check and does not pass through an attacked square.
  • En passant: immediately after an opposing pawn advances two squares past your pawn, you may capture it diagonally on your next move.
  • A pawn reaching the last rank promotes to queen, rook, bishop or knight. Threefold repetition, 50 moves without a capture or pawn move, or insufficient material result in a draw.
