Red moves first. Take turns moving; checkmate or stalemate the opponent to win.
Horses move in an L and can be blocked at the leg. Elephants move two diagonally, cannot cross the river, and can be blocked at the eye. Cannons capture over exactly one screen.
The generals may not face each other along an open file. Perpetual checking loses; other repeated positions draw.
Offline games allow undo. Online games use main time and a move timer; running out of time loses.
