How to play

Snake gameplay screenshot
  • Swipe on the field, press the arrow keys (or WASD), or tap the arrow buttons below to steer the snake. It can't turn straight back.
  • Each fruit is worth 10 points and makes the snake one segment longer. The more it eats, the faster it moves.
  • Every 5 fruits a bonus star appears for a short time. The sooner you get it, the more it's worth (20–50 points), and it doesn't make the snake longer.
  • The game ends if the snake runs into its own body. In Classic and Maze modes, hitting the border or a stone also ends it; in Wrap-around mode, leaving one side brings you back on the other.
  • Your best score for each mode and speed is saved on this device. The game pauses automatically when you switch away or open a dialog.

Detailed rules and controls

Controls
  • Touch: swipe anywhere on the field to turn; you can keep swiping without lifting your finger. Two quick swipes (say up, then left) turn on the next two steps in order.
  • Arrow buttons: they react as soon as you press. The left and right buttons are tall, easy to hit with your thumbs.
  • Keyboard: arrow keys or WASD to turn; Space, P or Esc to pause and resume; Space or Enter to start.
  • Before the start, pressing an arrow, swiping or tapping the field also starts the game. If you press the direction opposite the head, the snake sets off the way it is facing.
Scoring and speed
  • Each fruit is 10 points. A star is worth 50 when it appears and loses 5 every little while, down to 20. The ring around it shows the time left, and it blinks before it disappears.
  • The snake starts at about 5 cells per second, speeds up a little with each fruit, and tops out at about 13 cells per second.
  • These are for Normal speed. On Slow, the snake starts at about 4 cells per second and tops out at about 10; on Fast, it starts at about 7 and tops out at about 18.
  • Moving right behind your own tail is not a crash, because the tail moves out of the way at the same time.
  • Fill the entire field to win.
Mode
  • Classic: the field is surrounded by walls.
  • Wrap-around: no walls; leave one side and you come in from the other. Just don't run into yourself.
  • Maze: walls all around plus stones on the field, in a different layout every game.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't the snake turn around when I press the opposite direction?

The snake is heading right but the fruit is straight to its left: pressing Left won't turn it around. Press Up, then Left right away; the two turns happen on the next two steps and the snake loops back. In Wrap-around mode, leaving on the right brings you back on the left, so going through the edge is sometimes shorter.
