How to play

  • 2–4 players with a 52-card deck. With 2 players each gets 13 cards; with 3–4 players, 7 each. One card is turned up to start the discard pile, and the rest form the stock.
  • Start your turn by drawing: take the top card of the stock, or tap a card in the spread-out discard pile to take it along with every card above it. If you take more than one, the deepest card must be melded or laid off this turn.
  • After drawing you may meld: 3–4 cards of the same rank make a set, and 3 or more consecutive cards of one suit make a run. An Ace can be low or high, but runs can't wrap around. You can also lay off cards on anyone's melds.
  • End your turn by discarding 1 card. If you took only the top discard, you can't discard it this turn. Once every card in your hand has been melded, laid off or discarded, you've gone out and the hand ends.
  • At the end of each hand, melded and laid-off cards score points and cards left in your hand cost points. Aces are 15 (only 1 in A-2-3), J, Q and K are 10, and the rest count their face value.
  • The match ends when someone's total reaches 500 (250 optional), and the highest total wins. Online, each move has a 30-second limit; on timeout a move is made for you and auto-play takes over.

Detailed rules and controls

Melds
  • Set: 3 or 4 cards of the same rank.
  • Run: 3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit. An Ace can be low (A-2-3) or high (Q-K-A), but runs can't wrap around (no K-A-2).
  • You can lay off cards on anyone's melds on the table: add the 4th card to a set, or extend a run at either end.
Take discard
  • The discard pile is spread out so every card is visible. You may take any card in it, but you must also take every card above it.
  • If you take more than one card, the deepest one must be melded or laid off this turn; if you can't use it, you can't take those cards.
  • If you take only the top card, you don't have to use it right away, but you can't discard it this turn.
Scoring
  • Aces are 15 points (only 1 when used low in A-2-3), J, Q and K are 10 each, and 2 through 10 count their face value.
  • At the end of each hand, cards you melded or laid off score points, and cards left in your hand cost points. Going out earns no bonus.
  • The hand ends when someone goes out, or when the stock is empty and the next player doesn't take from the discard pile.
  • If anyone's total reaches the target (500 or 250) at the end of a hand, the highest total wins; tied players share the win.

Frequently asked questions

What are the limits on taking cards from the middle of the discard pile?

From bottom to top, the discard pile is 7♠, K♥, 2♣. To take the 7♠ you must also take the K and 2 above it, and the 7♠ must be melded or laid off this turn, so you need two 7s in hand to take it. Taking only the top card has no such requirement, but any extra cards you can't meld will cost points at the end of the hand.
