Detailed rules and controls
Minimum fan and payments
- Tiles: four each of the 1–9 Characters and the East, South, West, North, Red, Green and White honors, plus 8 flowers (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Plum, Orchid, Bamboo, Chrysanthemum), 72 in all
- Fan are the same as in Chinese Official Mahjong, with an 8-fan minimum; each flower is 1 fan but doesn't count toward the 8
- With only Characters and honors, Half Flush (6 fan) and Full Flush (24 fan) are common; one or two more fan are enough to reach the minimum
- The winner gets 8 points plus the fan (flowers included), paid by the opponent; the deal alternates each hand
- You can chow the opponent's discards and pung, kong or rob a kong; if the wall runs out with no winner, the hand is a draw with no score
Frequently asked questions
Does Two-Player Mahjong use the same fan as Chinese Official Mahjong?
Yes. It is scored with Chinese Official fan and needs 8 fan to win, with flowers not counting toward the minimum. Since there are only Characters and honors, a hand is often a Half Flush (6 fan) already; one Dragon Pung or a Concealed Hand gets you to 8.
