How to play

  • Korean hwatu: 48 cards in 12 months of 4. With 2 players (Matgo) each gets 10 cards and 8 go on the field; with 3 players each gets 7 and 6 go on the field. The number in the corner is the month.
  • On your turn play a card: capture a field card of the same month (choose one if there are two; take all if there are three), otherwise leave it on the field. Then flip the top card of the pile and do the same.
  • Score with gwang, yeol (animals), tti (ribbons) and pi (chaff). At 7 points (2 players) or 3 (3 players) choose Go to keep adding, or Stop to settle — but if you called Go and someone else stops first, you pay for everyone (go-bak).
  • Ppeok, jjok, ttadak, sweeps and bombs steal pi from opponents; shaking and bombs double your score; pi-bak, gwang-bak and meong-bak make losers pay double.
  • A match is 3 rounds by default (1 or 5 optional); the highest total wins. Online, each move has a 20-second limit; on timeout a card is played for you and auto-play takes over.
