How to play

  • Played on the 32 dark squares of an 8×8 board with 12 men each; Black moves first. Men move one square diagonally forward and capture by jumping over an adjacent enemy piece to the empty square behind it.
  • Captures are mandatory, but you may choose any capture. After a jump you must keep jumping while you can; at a fork you may take either route.
  • A man reaching the far row becomes a king. Kings move and jump one square diagonally forward or backward but cannot fly across the board; a man crowned during a jump ends its move there.
  • Win by capturing every enemy piece or leaving the opponent without a legal move. Threefold repetition, 40 moves each without a capture or man move, or agreement is a draw.
  • Online games use a chess clock and running out of time loses; players swap who moves first every game, and leaving mid-game counts as a loss. Offline games are untimed and allow undo.
